What We Do

What We Do

A quick overview

At The Countess of Brecknock Hospice, we provide palliative and end-of-life care to adults with a life-limiting illness who live in Andover, Ludgershall, Stockbridge, Sutton Scotney, Whitchurch and surrounding villages. We also support their families, friends and carers.

Every year, our team of experts support over 1,000 patients in our hospice and in their own homes. We also provide bereavement support. All our services are free of charge, testament to our belief that dignity, comfort and peace should be accessible to all, regardless of circumstance.

Our history and how we are run today

The Countess of Brecknock Hospice was founded in 1990 with a donation left by the Countess of Brecknock. It was then reborn in 2020 with the building of a £4.8million state-of-the-art facility, thanks to the incredible generosity of the local community.

We are an NHS hospice, run and managed by Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT). We were delighted to receive HHFT’s ‘Gold Ward’ accreditation in 2023, 2024 and 2025 and we are proud that we have been rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Over a third of the hospice’s running costs come from our community through charitable donations made to The Countess of Brecknock Hospice Trust. As well as supporting the running costs, the charitable trust, thanks to the generosity of our community, also funds other services and special projects. This includes an additional specialist palliative community care nurse, our Hospice at Home overnight service, specialist equipment and much more.

Without the support from our community, the hospice wouldn’t exist.

Thank you for everything you do.
