Jane’s story: A precious wedding

“There aren’t really the words to say how incredible the hospice team were.”

Jane was diagnosed with cancer in 2021. The following year, while COVID restrictions were still in place, Jane was admitted to Winchester Hospital following a deterioration in her symptoms. The restrictions meant she and Allan had to rely on video calls for months, unable to be together in person.

A few months after she was admitted, Jane called Allan with unexpected news—she was being transferred to the Countess of Brecknock Hospice.

Allan said: “I didn’t know much about the hospice so I gave them a call to find out what to expect. Because of all the COVID restrictions one of the things I wanted to know about was visiting hours. I was really surprised when they said that there weren’t any! I could visit anytime and even stay overnight with Jane”.

One of the most important moments in Jane and Allan’s family life was fast approaching—their son’s wedding, just days after Jane’s admission to the hospice. She had her outfit ready, but they weren’t sure she would be well enough to attend. However, with the support of the hospice team, Jane’s symptoms were carefully managed, allowing her to be part of this unforgettable day.

With a wheelchair and the help of hospice staff, Jane was picked up by taxi and, alongside Allan, the groom, and one of the bridesmaids, made her way to Winchester Registry Office. It was a very emotional moment for the family, made all the more special by Jane’s determination to not only attend the ceremony but also join the reception for a few precious hours.

Sadly, just a few days later, Jane died. But in those final days, she was surrounded by love, with family and friends able to visit freely.

Reflecting on their experience, Allan shared:

“There aren’t really the words to say how incredible the hospice team were. They were always there to help and explain what was happening in a very straightforward way. They really did go above and beyond to look after Jane and make sure her last days were as comfortable as possible. The fact that Jane was able to go to our son’s wedding meant so much to her and our family.”

Jane’s story is a testament to the compassionate care provided by the hospice, ensuring that even in the most difficult moments, love, dignity, and treasured memories remain at the heart of everything.
